About
Academic Background
Saurabh Kumar S is a Ph.D. Research Scholar at the Centre for Transportation Systems (CTRANS), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee. He holds a postgraduate degree from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur, where he achieved outstanding academic standing, and a bachelor's degree from Jaya Engineering College, Chennai. His academic journey is marked by consistent excellence and recognised through accolades such as securing top awards in poster presentations at the CTRANS Centre Research Day and Industry-Academia Meets. Additionally, he has gained practical field experience as a Project Assistant at the CSIR Central Leather Research Institute and through technical internships focusing on civil engineering construction and structural rehabilitation.
Core Research Interests
His fundamental research focuses on electric mobility, life cycle assessment (LCA), and mode choice modelling. He leverages a comprehensive technical skill set, including proficiency in programming languages like R and Python, alongside specialised analytical software such as VISSIM, SimaPro, OpenLCA, and NLOGIT, to analyse urban transportation systems and evaluate their broader environmental footprints.
Expanding Domain & Key Project Focuses
Electric Mobility and Environmental Sustainability A significant portion of his research is dedicated to evaluating the environmental impact of emerging transit modes. He actively contributes to an ICCT India project that compares the life cycle emissions of various vehicle technologies to determine their future implications for urban environments. Concurrently, his ongoing research at IIT Roorkee involves conducting detailed life cycle assessments of electric two-wheeler sharing systems to understand their viability and impact on last-mile urban connectivity.
Transport Infrastructure and Safety Analysis His expertise encompasses macro-level transport infrastructure and road safety evaluations. He has previously evaluated safety-based performance measures for a four-lane national highway, utilising the Himalayan Expressway as a primary case study. Furthermore, he contributes to comprehensive logistics planning by assessing the reach and anticipated impact of the KGB Water Freight Corridor on stakeholders, a project aligned with the objectives of PM Gati Shakti and supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).
Academic Leadership and Teaching In addition to his research endeavours, Saurabh is actively engaged in academic leadership and pedagogical roles within his institution. He serves as a Teaching Assistant at CTRANS, facilitating advanced coursework on quantitative techniques in infrastructure systems and intelligent transport systems. He also demonstrates strong administrative capabilities by coordinating significant academic events, including ICSSR workshops, the CTRANS Centre Research Day, and the Industry-Academia Meet.
